Two of the coolest aliens ever created in an average imitation of both

(scroll down for trailer)

I remember arguing over who would win out of the Predator and an alien as a kid. I think a fair few of my age did. Alien is largely regarded as one of the best horror movies ever made. Predator was Arnie in his heyday and could be regarded as one of his best movies. I definitely do. The Alien franchise even managed a couple of sequels before….Resurrection. Lets not talk about Resurrection. Predator….not so much. Just the one great movie.

The comic books of Alien vs Predator were pretty well received. People were clearly interested in the movie so all they had to do was take all the best things about the first movies, which Anderson did, except he then threw most of them in the bin. Lance Henriksen must regret saying yes to this movie. It’s not that it’s that bad, it’s just also not that good. When people have been waiting a long time to see something like this, to get….something like this is just disappointing.

The good stuff: it goes without saying that there is fun to be had in watching a Predator dispatch aliens. The action is pretty decent. The basic premise is a good one: humans accidentally stumble upon what they thought was a pyramid but is actually a predator training ground in which they hunt aliens incubated by people who worshipped them as gods.

Having said that, it is poorly executed, and until the two actual stars properly kick off the action, the biggest challenge is pretending to care about all the exposition and under-developed characters. We have Ripley-lite in Saana Lathan, who tries but c’mon, Sigourney cannot be bested in films with aliens in them. The rest of the cast you probably won’t care about much at all.  I feel like Anderson was stuck between giving people a serious update on the suspense of Alien and violence of Predator, or an all out action movie, but instead decided to make neither and ended up with a PG-13 borefest melded onto a PG-13 low budget action. Because, and here is another gripe, neither the aliens nor the predator look as good as they did decades earlier. How is that even possible? It was said at the time that if you were a teenage boy you liked this movie, but I doubt that would be true of teenage boys now as people expect way more from movies like this.

My verdict: The action is good, but not for long enough. The characters are forgettable, and they did not really do the aliens (remember how terrifying they are in the original movie) justice. A pretty good premise ruined by poor execution. Could’ve been way better but at least its better than 30 Days Of Night; Dark Days

My score: 40 percent
