Dracula enslaves Penguin

This animated movie was released as a tie-in to the movie Batman Begins and was based on “The Batman” animated series. It has a much darker tone than the show though, and was actually reclassified after its release to a TV-PG-V rating. Rino Romano is Bruce Wayne/Batman (his role from the show) and Peter Stormare is Dracula. Tara Strong (Batgirl in The New Batman Adventures and Gotham Girls) voices Vicki Vale, who joins The Batman cast members Tom Kenny and Kevin Michael Richardson as The Penguin and The Joker.

It begins with The Joker and Penguin breaking out of jail to find a hidden crypt supposedly full of money. The Joker doesn’t quite make it, falling into a river to be electrocuted after a confrontation with Batman. The Penguin is searching through a crypt when he accidentally reanimates Dracula after cutting his hand. Dracula then hypnotizes Penguin to become his servant.

After Dracula, posing as a Dr. Alucard, attends one of Bruce Wayne’s parties he takes an interest in Vicki Vale and causes havoc, leading Bruce to quickly deduce that he is Dracula. The attacks that Dracula has been carried out have meanwhile been blamed on Batman, which results in him being chased by SWAT team members when confronting Dracula, a confrontation Batman is lucky to survive.

Batman must then find a way to halt the spreading vampire menace, defeat Dracula and save not only Vicki but the rest of Gotham from this ancient danger.

This movie received pretty positive reviews. It is pretty fast paced at the beginning, slowing a bit towards the end, with a story that is mostly good. I tend not to like these types of crossovers too much, but this one wasn’t too bad. It has a darker tone than the show, but it still kind of feels like an extended episode. It is probably a bit too much for younger kids to watch some of the scenes and not get scared, but it doesn’t really have enough to be that interesting, for me anyway, as an adult.

The animation again doesn’t push any boundaries but is pretty decent. The voice actors do a good job. Kevin Michael Richardson’s take on the Joker is great, although not quite as good as Hamill’s. I also like Tom Kenny’s Penguin, who also has some pretty humorous lines. The soundtrack is okay but could have been better.

Overall, I found this to be an average but enjoyable Batman movie. The fights between Batman and Dracula are cool, but overall the story is not on the same level as the better animated Batman movies.

My Score: 53 percent
